Education
NAMI-BC believes
education to be one of the most valuable tools to families working
to improve their lives and the lives of their family member(s) with
a serious mental illness. Education is offered to family members
in a variety of ways; including informational literature, NAMI library
of articles, books, videos and monthly Educational Meetings with
speakers on various topics of interest.
In addition
to educating family members, NAMI-BC reaches out into the community
to increase public awareness and understanding of mental illnesses.
We also work towards public education each May, during Mental Health
Awareness Month, and have a strong focus on the first week in October,
designated nationally as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW). During
this all-important week, NAMI members join together by means of
candlelight vigils, media appearances and interviews, and other
public events to increase education and understanding about mental
illnesses.
