NAMI-BC
Director, Bonnie Brace along with several NAMI-BC Board Members
present Congressman John Olver an award for exemplarily service,
from NAMI National for his leadership in the House of Representatives
on housing for people with mental illness and other severe disabilities.
Over the past 2.5 years, Congressman Olver has been the Ranking
Democrat on a important Subcommittee that oversees funding for the
federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In his
position on this important Subcommittee, he has provided critical
leadership in fighting proposed cuts to the HUD budget especially
in opposing cuts to supportive housing programs serving people with
mental illness. In 2005 - and again this year – he led the effort
to defeat a proposal to impose a 50% cut 811 program, reduction
of $120 million and complete elimination of funding for development
of new supportive housing units. HUD 811 develops permanent supportive
housing for people with severe disabilities, including mental illness.
Congressman Olver is also a strong supporter of funding for McKinney-Vento
Homeless Assistance Act, a critical resource across Massachusetts
in homelessness. He is a leader in Congress in supporting the national
goal of ending chronic homelessness over the next decade.
