NAMI-BC Mission Statement

The mission of nami-bc is to support, educate and advocate for all those whose lives are affected by mental illness in Berkshire County. Our vision is one of an integrated community where acceptance and hope are widespread.

NAMI-BC GOALS
•Educate individuals with mental illness, their families and our communities about mental illness
and the fact that because of advances in science and treatment, recovery is possible.
•Support individuals with mental illness and their families through advocacy, peer and family
support groups, family-to-family classes, monthly education meetings, and our telephone support line.
•Advocate for improved treatment, opportunities,
housing, rehabilitation, and employment for people with mental illness.
•Work with other local organizations to provide the best education, advocacy, and support to those in need.
•Contribute to state and national NAMI as they encourage research into the causes, systems, and treatments of brain disorders.
NAMI-BC RESOURCES

NAMI-BC Believes:

  • Mental Illness is a biological brain disorder and is therefore treatable
  • Mental illness is not anyone’s fault
  • You can survive as an intact family
  • You can improve your quality of life
  • Together we can give each other strong support
  • Together we can educate each other about mental illness issues
  • Together we can advocate for each other and produce constructive change

NAMI-BC Provides:

  • Information regarding mental illnesses, services in Berkshire County and assistance in accessing these services
  • Communication and information lines for family members with area agencies, service providers and DMH personnel
  • Quality of care, rights and interests of families and people with mental illnesses, particularly those who cannot speak for themselves
  • Cooperation among families, those with mental illness, DMH and other service providers
  • Involvement in all aspects of community-based and hospitalization services, focusing on rehabilitation models
  • Working toward better community understanding of mental illness to decrease discrimination and stigma
  • Working with local legislators regarding appropriate mental health legislation
  • Continued research into all aspects of mental illnesses
  • Empowerment, awareness and self-reliance to stabilize the family unit
    Reducing feelings of stress and isolation and gain access to needed services within the community
  • Improving the quality of life of the families we serve and the community at large by providing Advocacy, Education and Support
